A Livestream Class with Tony Mierzwicki

Sunday, February 20 at 3:15 pm in The Saturn Library

This lecture will look at the curses and binding spells used in the Mediterranean area during the Graeco-Roman period, focusing on Egypt. The best known such curses were inscribed on lead tablets, which were produced during the period from the fifth century BCE to the fifth century CE in an area spanning northern Africa and Europe. The tablets could be Greek, Latin, as well as Egyptian and North African. The spells normally addressed underworld deities. They had the objective of ritual binding, wherein another human being was subjected to one's will, unable to act according to their own wishes.
