This workshop examines both monotheism’s hidden polytheism and the latter’s renewed relevance to a world seeking to both honor its many spiritual traditions and respect the transformative insights contemporary science is achieving. Polytheism never disappeared, it was hidden under incoherent theologies associated with ‘monotheism’ which inevitably split into warring groups worshiping different deities.

The rise of modern science incorporated Protestant assumptions about the world that made animism and polytheism seemingly primitive and childish even as it abandoned monotheism. Today much contemporary science is abandoning its last theological assumptions and demonstrating the evidence for animism and polytheism is strong, while shedding light on the extraordinary variety of our practices.

The workshop incorporates work from Gus diZerega’s book god is dead Long Live the Gods: Polytheism Today as well as new work as yet unpublished.
