From the very beginning humans have recognized the power of blood. Cross culturally we have used blood to remove sins, heal, appease the gods, and facilitate blessings from them. For women, menstrual blood has held power and spiritual significance. The acquisition of blood by Priests is typically attained in some type of ritual setting and can come from both human and animal sacrifices.

History shows this is true for both mono and polytheists, and it is also true from the most advanced civilizations to the most primitive. Even today worshippers Christ and of Satan believe in blood sacrifices and the power of the blood.

Until not so very long ago, the blood of a kill, the blood of confrontation, the blood of fertility, the cycles of nature, were integral parts of human society, the daily life of tribal community. In reality, except for small pockets of butchers and farmers, soldiers, doctors, midwives or morticians, it is only in the past 100 years or so that our Western culture has removed itself from the wet mess, the blood of living. For most, the very thought of immersing their hands in blood is abhorrent but, blood is both the underlying river of life that flows across the inner landscape of our bones, through our tissues, muscle and organ and not only is it our life source but, it carries Ancestral wisdom, memory, and sacrifice.
