The Orishas are forces of nature (parts of God) who mediate between Olodumare and humanity. Humanity can commune directly with God by way of trance/possession—always in a ritual setting. Ebo (cleansings) or sacrifice is a broad concept that includes all types of offerings to the Orisha. Orishas (singular: orisha) are divine spirits that play a key role in the Yoruba religion of West Africa and several religions of the African diaspora that derive from it, such as Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican Santería and Brazilian Candomblé. The preferred spelling varies depending on the language in question.
