The Quimbanda is a syncretic tradition that appeared in Brazil in the beginning of the 20th century, blending elements of Portuguese Witchcraft, Catholic Demonology and Spiritism with African religions.

The lecture will provide a narrative about the origins of the Quimbanda and its main spirits, focusing in the first decades of the 20th century.

The lecture will focus on how the European Witchcraft blended with African religions in Brazil, to create the tradition of the Quimbanda, and how of evolved beyond its original influences to become a new magico-religious tradition of its own.
