The Great Forgetting: Remembering the Enchanted World We've Lost

Witches and other magickal people frequently experience ourselves living in what is often described as an “enchanted world.” In such spaces, we experience the world not as a stage on which we and others act, but as alive “all the way down” with other beings and energies, with some of whom we can enter into important relationships. Much of our lore concerns how to do this. We share this outlook with indigenous and many non-Western modern societies worldwide.

Yet our larger world denies this reality, and most people within it often ridicule our position. As a culture, we have forgotten what most of human history and societies worldwide have taken for granted. I call this “the Great Forgetting.”

Why is the modern West so different? Why has this outlook been taken for granted for thousands of years among many different cultures? This workshop answers these questions, sometimes in surprising ways, and in doing so will help many of us deepen and improve our own practices and experiences, particularly rituals.
