Bio for Max Dashu

Max Dashu is a land witch and ecstatic veleda. She founded the Suppressed Histories Archives in 1970 to research and document women's history on a global scale. She built a collection of 50,000 images and created 100 slideshows on female cultural heritages across time. Her work foregrounds women, especially matricultural and indigenous women passed over by standard histories, and highlights female spheres of power retained even in some patriarchal societies.

Dashu is internationally known for her expertise on ancient female iconography in world archaeology; female spheres of power and matricultures; patriarchies and allied systems of domination; medicine women, female shamans, witches, and witch hunts. Her books include Witches and Pagans: Women in European Folk Culture, 700-1100 (2016) and Women in Greek Mythography: Pythias, Melissae and Titanides (2023), Veleda Press. They are part of a 15-volume series, Secret History of the Witches. Dashu has produced two videos: Woman Shaman: The Ancients (2013) and Women's Power in Global Perspective (2008). Her poster series illustrates global patterns of female figurines, breastpots, and vulva petroglyphs.

Since 1973, Max Dashu has presented slide talks at universities, community centers, bookstores, schools, libraries, prisons, galleries, festivals, and conferences around North America and internationally. Her work is followed by over 250,000 people on Facebook and ranks in the top 1% in her fields on Academia.edu.

Dashu teaches online courses with monthly visual livecasts on women’s history, from female iconography in the Sahara, to ancient Anatolia, China, Mexico, Arabia, and Etruria, to presentations on Matricultures; Prophetic Women; and Racism, History, and Lies.
